Erwin McManus’ Real Position on the Authority of Scripture

Just some documentation on the postmodern doublespeak of Emergent church leader Erwin McManus

Erwin McManus’ Real Position on the Authority of Scripture : “When challenged openly, Erwin is quick to defend himself by making “orthodox” statements like, “the Scriptures are God’s authoritative word to us.” But then he turns around and train his leaders to perpetuate the unregenerate mind of the culture in their own circles of church leadership, telling their followers that the Word of God is God’s word “to us” and for us, and is all about us; that it means, more or less, whatever you think it means. The contradiction should be screamingly apparent to anyone reading this! Scripture, according to Erwin’s definition of “authoritative,” doesn’t sound authoritative at all. “

  1. Please provide a better example. This doesn’t ring true as your conclusion is subjective. Are you saying because he didn’t use the word authoritive the conclusion should be made that he was saying scripture wasn’t authoritive? If you knew Erwin, you would know differently. Have you listened to his teachings or read his books like “An Unstoppable Force”?

  2. Tony

Back in 2007 I quoted a small clip by Ron Foster and gave a link to an article written by Ron Foster. I did not say anything about what you said. You really need to be asking Ron Foster your questions. They have a comment section on the blog that his article is still posted on.

  3. I believe it is a proven truth that people would rather follow than think and here we have a good example of that.

The Bereans were more noble than their contemporaries in Thessalonica for one reason, they searched the Scriptures to see if the things Paul taught were true. But this takes thought and it is easier to be told what to think and how to behave.

The unregenerate yet religious Jew rejected Jesus of Nazareth as Messiah because they refused to search their Scriptures to verify his claims, yet they went after their Rabbis to be told what to believe. Roman Catholics refuse to search the Scriptures but blindly follow after the dogma of Rome given to them by the Priest. The reformed Church has and is become apostate because of this same principle.

If we do not use God’s word as our standard we will soon be indoctrinated by the heresies of the ungodly. Yesterday’s indoctrination of men will become today’s truth and when we believe the lie is truth then we are in utter darkness.

The quote you gave above is not complex yet Tony has proved himself incapable of understanding it. Why? Because he is blinded by his version of truth.
